Couples and Relationship Counseling

Couples Therapy, Asheville Family Counseling, Stacey Curnow

Are you and your loved one fighting a lot? Are the number of “off-limits” topics growing? Are you feeling unheard and unsupported? Perhaps you’re struggling with a serious medical diagnosis or a traumatic event? Maybe you need support as you navigate a new way of being in relationship?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then we’re here to help.

Want to experience an incredible transformation in your relationship in a very short period of time? Check out our Counseling Intensive!

Our work draws primarily from Attachment Theory and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is a short-term, structured approach to couples and relationship counseling. Empirical and experiential research shows that EFT helps 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery (the best results of any couples therapy) and that these positive effects last over time.

We use a non-blaming approach that helps couples make sense of their relationship in a safe and collaborative way. Everyone is invited into a process that makes it possible to stay connected even in times of great stress within the relationship.

Benefits of Couples and Relationship Counseling Include:

  • Growing what is already good within your relationship
  • Support for working through unexpected and/or unwanted events
  • Improving communication based on understanding and appreciating underlying feelings and needs
  • Enjoying deeper intimacy and more satisfying sex with your partner
  • Identifying and reducing negative interaction cycles
  • Repairing the inevitable ruptures that occur in any intimate relationship
  • Meeting the needs of the individual and the relationship
  • Becoming happy co-parents (You love your kids and want the best for them, whether you’re still together or not.)
  • Exploring “uncoupling” (separating with loving intention) or “opening up” your relationship (consensual non-monogamy)
  • Maintaining compassion for yourself and your partner, no matter what

A further note about our practice: We take responsibility for learning about current systems of oppression and how they do harm. We take accountability for our missteps and micro-aggressions. We consistently work to create an environment that is welcoming and affirming of people from different races/ethnicities, sexualities, gender identities, class strata, abilities, and religious/spiritual orientations. We have taken special training and received supervision around these identities/systems and have the ability to consult with someone around identities we don’t personally hold.

All of our clients are seen, heard, and valued for exactly who they are.

The majority of couples who engage with our services have previously undergone counseling and have expressed that their experiences often left them feeling more distressed, but with us, they have found healing and positive outcomes.

Please also note that couples counseling is not recommended for relationships with ongoing or recent incidents of intimate partner violence (IPV).
